Your course is ready. Before students can pay and start learning, you need a payment account, approval to accept live payments, and an LMS connection that grants access to the right course.
Here’s how to create a Razorpay account for your LMS: register your business, complete the required verification, add your settlement bank account, and arrange the integration. Test the complete purchase journey before opening enrolments.
This tutorial is for Indian coaching and training businesses collecting one-time course payments. Razorpay’s Test Mode lets your developer begin integration while account verification is underway. Live payments require activation. Razorpay Quickstart
Still deciding which provider to use? Start with our guide to choosing a payment gateway for your LMS, then return here for the Razorpay account setup and integration steps.
The setup process
- Create your Razorpay account.
- Enter your business details.
- Complete the KYC checks shown for your business.
- Add your bank account and submit your application.
- Confirm website verification and prepare integration credentials.
- Connect your LMS and test course access.
- Switch to live payments with your implementation team.
Before you start: prepare your details
Use an email address and phone number that your business will retain. Choose someone authorised to complete verification and respond to questions about the application.
Have these details available:
| Information | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| Business identity | Legal name, business type and applicable PAN details |
| Authorised person | Identity details for the owner or authorised signatory |
| Business documents | Registration or other supporting documents requested for your business type |
| Settlement account | Account holder’s name, bank account number and IFSC |
| LMS website | The address where students will browse and purchase courses |
| Course information | What you teach, what students pay and when access begins |
Treat this as a preparation list. The documents Razorpay requests depend on your business structure and verification route. Check its business-type KYC requirements before gathering documents.
Keep your legal name separate from your course brand. For example, a training business might teach under a brand name while its registration and bank account use another legal name. Enter each in the appropriate field.
Also review your course pages. A student should be able to find the price, access period, cancellation terms and a working contact address. These details help people understand what they’re buying.
Step 1: Create your Razorpay account
Open the official Razorpay signup page.
Enter your email address or phone number, select the appropriate country of registration, and complete the verification prompts. Follow any password instructions shown.
Keep control of this account within your business. A developer can help with the integration, but your institution should retain access to its payment records and account settings.
Once you reach onboarding, work through the requested business and verification details. The exact screens can vary with your business type.
Step 2: Enter your business details
Choose the business structure that matches your records. A privately owned company, a sole proprietorship and a trust need different information; “training institute” describes the activity, not the legal structure.
Provide the requested legal name, PAN details, brand name and business category. Check that the details retrieved during verification match your documents. Razorpay explains the available routes in its account setup guide.
For the business description, explain what students actually buy. Here’s an illustrative example you can adapt if it matches your operation:
We provide online exam-preparation courses to students in India. Students purchase courses through our website and receive access to recorded lessons, practice tests and study materials.
Replace the example with your own services. If you sell live classes or fixed-duration programmes, say so.
For a Trogon custom LMS project, confirm the payment website address with your implementation contact. This helps you submit the domain intended for student purchases.
Step 3: Complete Razorpay KYC verification
KYC means “Know Your Customer.” It’s the identity and business verification required during onboarding.
Razorpay’s current documentation describes two routes:
- CKYC verification: Razorpay retrieves existing Central KYC records where available, with the required consent.
- Fallback verification: You provide the requested documents and complete further checks, including Video KYC where applicable.
Follow the route offered in your application. Existing CKYC records can reduce manual steps, but the details still need to match. Current Razorpay onboarding process
The owner’s documents and the business’s documents serve different purposes. Submit the relevant PAN and identity details for the person or entity requested.
Razorpay’s document guidance also says the authorised signatory’s PAN and address proof should belong to the same person. Review those names before submitting. KYC document guidance
If the application asks for Video KYC, the authorised person should complete it directly. Follow the displayed instructions about documents and device access.
Don’t select a different business type simply because its checklist looks shorter. Correcting the application later can interrupt your setup work.
Step 4: Verify your bank account and submit
Enter the settlement bank account details requested during onboarding. This is the account intended to receive funds from your course payments.
Check every digit against your bank records.
Pay attention to the beneficiary name. Razorpay’s bank-account guidance explains name-matching requirements, including the proprietor-name alternative for proprietorships. If there’s a mismatch, resolve it through the requested bank evidence or support process. Bank account guidance
Complete the verification prompts, review your application and submit it.
Check the Dashboard and registered email for updates. Respond to clarification requests with the specific information requested.
Don’t schedule your first paid batch around an assumed approval deadline. Razorpay’s FAQ says activation is subject to approval from its banking partners. Your application’s status is the useful reference. Account activation FAQ
While you wait, coordinate the integration with your Trogon contact. You can prepare the course, price, student test account and expected access rules.
Step 5: Prepare the website and integration credentials
Before your LMS can collect live website payments, check that Razorpay has verified the website or app details. Account activation alone may leave this task outstanding.
Razorpay’s documentation says website details are required for access to live API keys. If you skipped the website during onboarding, add it through the Dashboard and complete the review. Website and app verification
API credentials let the LMS connect to your payment account.
| Credential type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Test credentials | Run simulated purchases during development |
| Live credentials | Process real student payments after approval and integration testing |
Your implementation contact can confirm when credentials are needed. If you’re generating them yourself:
- Sign in with an account role that can access API keys.
- Select the required Test or Live mode.
- Open Account & Settings → API Keys, under Website and app settings.
- Select Generate Key.
- Save the Key ID and Key Secret securely.
The Key Secret is shown when generated. Keep it out of screenshots, public documents and ordinary support messages. Coordinate secure configuration with your developer.
If you already use this Razorpay account elsewhere, check with the developer before regenerating keys. Existing integrations may need updating. API key instructions
Integration handoff checklist: Confirm the LMS domain, activation status, test course, price and intended access period with your Trogon contact. Agree on a secure way to configure credentials.
Your custom LMS integration should follow your course purchase and access rules. Confirm the settings for your particular build.
Step 6: Connect Razorpay and test student access
Ask your implementation team to connect the account and run a complete purchase test.
For a custom integration, Razorpay’s Standard Checkout documentation requires server-side payment-signature verification. It also explains payment capture, which needs to be handled before treating a purchase as paid. Standard Checkout integration
You don’t need to write that code. You do need to check the result.
Walk through an example purchase
Suppose you offer a ₹2,000 exam-preparation course with 90 days of access. This is an illustrative example, not a customer case.
Create a test student account and open that course’s purchase page. Check the displayed price and access period.
Then ask the implementation team to test these outcomes:
| Test | Expected LMS behaviour |
|---|---|
| Successful captured payment | Grant the correct student access to the purchased course |
| Failed payment | Keep the order unpaid and allow a retry |
| Student cancels checkout | Keep paid course access closed |
| Browser closes after payment | Reconcile the payment and grant access once it’s verified |
| Repeated payment notification | Avoid duplicate enrolment or extending access twice |
| Student buys a different course | Grant access only to the course purchased |
The browser-close test deserves attention. A student may pay successfully and leave before your LMS receives the browser response.
Razorpay supports webhooks: notifications sent directly to your server. These allow the integration to receive payment updates independently of the student’s browser. Razorpay webhooks
Notifications can arrive more than once or out of order. Ask the developer to account for this so a repeated event doesn’t create another enrolment. Webhook validation and testing
We recommend checking access from the student’s account. An administrator seeing a paid order doesn’t prove that the student can open the first lesson.
If your admissions team uses a CRM, agree how the payment maps to the student and course records. Our CRM-to-LMS admission handover guide explains shared enrolment IDs, record ownership and duplicate handling.
Step 7: Switch to live payments
Once activation, website verification and integration testing are complete, arrange the switch to live credentials with your Trogon implementation contact.
Test credentials process simulated transactions. They won’t collect real course fees. Test and Live modes
Agree on a controlled live purchase with the team. Check the payment record, LMS order, enrolment and course access. Record the payment ID so you can trace that purchase if something needs fixing.
Make this purchase test part of your wider launch review. Follow our custom LMS launch testing checklist to check learner journeys, administrator readiness and support before opening enrolments.
Payment confirmation and bank settlement happen at different stages. Razorpay settles the available balance according to your settlement cycle, after applicable fees and taxes. Check the Dashboard for your account’s details. Balances and settlements
Troubleshooting and common questions
My account is active, but I can’t generate live API keys.
Check whether your website or app verification is complete. Also confirm that your Dashboard role has API-key access. Razorpay documents these checks in its API key FAQ.
A student paid, but the course is still locked.
Give your implementation contact the payment ID, course, student account and approximate transaction time.
Ask them to check the payment’s captured status, order mapping and notification processing. They should reconcile the existing payment before asking the student to try paying again.
Can I start before my LMS website is ready?
You can begin Test Mode integration during account verification. Live website payments require the relevant approval and website verification described above.
Is GST registration compulsory for every applicant?
Razorpay’s FAQ says applicants without GST can select the relevant option during onboarding. It also says a current account isn’t universally mandatory. Use the requirements for your actual business type. These onboarding options don’t determine your tax obligations. Razorpay onboarding FAQ
Will this setup automatically collect monthly course fees?
Recurring billing needs a separate subscription setup and suitable LMS integration. This tutorial covers one-time purchases. Confirm recurring-payment requirements with your team before offering monthly automatic collections. One-time and recurring payment options
